Gabrielle Giffords and attacks on immigrants and members of the LGBT community, Trumka said. It is also responsible for a racist conspiracy against President Barack Obama:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We saw it in the racism that has found overt and covert expression since Barack Obama began his run for office\u00e2\u20ac\u201dfrom outright declarations of people who said out loud they would never vote for a black man to the ridiculously persistent obsession with our president\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s birth certificate. Regardless of his policies or priorities, President Obama is shadowed by the drumbeat of suspicion based on his \u00e2\u20ac\u0153other\u00e2\u20ac\u009d-ness. And those suspicions are fed and watered constantly by forces that were threatened by his message of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153hope and change.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Trumka, who attended Thursday\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcs speech as the president\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s guest, said workers have been \u00e2\u20ac\u0153vilified\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153extremist small government posse\u00e2\u20ac\u009d that has turned them into \u00e2\u20ac\u0153public enemy No. 1.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d In state after state this year, politicians have gone after the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153paychecks, benefits and basic rights\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 of workers and sought to pit them against each other \u00e2\u20ac\u009din a rabid campaign to shift government support to tax breaks for the wealthy and already profitable corporations.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka used a statement commemorating the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 to bash conservatives for opening &#8220;the door to hate.&#8221; . (AP File Photo)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Recall that before the 2004 election, the AFL-CIO <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sffdlocal798.org\/Vol33no1\/PoliticalOp.html\" target=\"_blank\">heavily criticized<\/a> President George W. Bush for using images of firefighters from Sept. 11 in campaign ads, calling them \u00e2\u20ac\u0153disgraceful\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and saying they \u00e2\u20ac\u0153smack of political opportunism.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m disappointed but not surprised that the President would try to trade on the heroism of those fire fighters in the September 11 attacks. The use of 9\/11 images are hypocrisy at its worst,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Harold Schaitberger, president of the firefighters union, said in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>But this time, it\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcs Trumka outright using the firefighters\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 heroism, linking their bravery of running into the burning World Trade Center to standing with teachers in Wisconsin:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what sent 347 firefighters to their death at the Twin Towers 10 years ago. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also what sent firefighters to stand with teachers in Wisconsin even though Gov. Scott Walker had exempted them from his attack on public employees. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what moves employed people now to demand good jobs for the 26 million Americans who are looking for work. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what gives us the courage to take on a crumbling economy and the politicians preaching austerity and ignoring our jobs crisis\u00e2\u20ac\u201dto take them on and say, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We are America. We are better than this. And we are one.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In his conclusion, Trumka calls for union activism to honor the anniversary:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Brothers and sisters, friends, I hope you will join me in marking this solemn anniversary by committing to redouble your activism on behalf of America\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s everyday working heroes.
