For the second time now we are witnessing over-the-top force being used by police at of all places Independence Mall; the nations birthplace Philadelphia PA!
The protester, Iraq war veteran Emily Yates, was apparently playing her banjo in the wrong place of the park during a protest against military action in Syria!
“Emily, an organizer with Iraq Veterans Against the War, was out in the streets in Philadelphia today(Aug 30) with many others protesting the impending war in Syria. She marched peacefully with the protest to Independence Mall and there commenced playing her banjo, as she does all over the country. Now she’s in jail. She has not been allowed any communication with the outside world. We are raising money to pay for both her legal defense and the incidental expenses of her unjust imprisonment.” ~Yates Defense Fund
I was not aware parts of the park are off-limits for people to stand, play their banjo that dictate being forcibly arrested and removed!
How many times does Yates ask why and what she is doing wrong? There are barricades in front of/ around the area where she was singing, playing her banjo as they bent her over a bench and handcuffed her. Let’s agree for shits and giggles she was in the wrong area, designated off-limits for protesters. Where are the signs (temporary) saying “Keep Out”? Does her presence a few feet behind a barricade justify the excessive force used by park police?
Since they were putting their hands on her anyway they could have just dragged her out of the area and left her with the other protesters and then issued her a ticket/ summons to avoid making a scene. No, that makes too much sense, let’s get 8+ officers to manhandle a woman and carry her to another off-limits area where they continued roughing the vet up.
I will say in their defense she should not have resisted the moment they started arresting her, regardless it doesn’t justify this type of treatment in the birthplace of our nation!
Those of you in law enforcement that are doing this kind of crap are crossing a dangerous line. You are now showing we the people that you will choose to take orders acting like a bunch of automatons rather than using some common sense.
