The only time the democrats are the party of the middle class is when they expect something, namely votes, in return. They do not care about the American people, they only care about advancing their radical agenda to fundamental transformation. IMO they will be happy once the US officially has a two class system: the ruling elitists and we the ruled!
The republicants are no better but lets keep in mind how much damage the demoncrats did with just 2 years of a super majority by ramming obamacare through, passing a useless economic stimulus bills coupled with business as usual in DC has brought the national debt over $17T! So they will push to pass more entitlements to gain the trust of the people so they can hold power and increase it which will only result in more pain for the avg Joe & Jane.
